New MRI Small E**ugh to Fit Inside NICU Tested on Neonates


At the*Jessop Wing Maternity Hospital in Sheffield, England, researchers are evaluating a tiny new MRI scanner from GE Healthcare that was developed to make imaging of the tiniest patients easier on everyone involved. The problem is that typically the MRI scanner is*located in a dedicated wing of a hospital, often far from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Moving such patients across floors and up and down elevators creates challenges and eats up a lot of time.

The new scanner is so Small that it can be located within the NICU itself and fragile Neonates don’t have to travel far at all for scans. Studying the clinical benefits of the new MRI will take about two years and positive results are expected to lead to regulatory approvals.
