افتراضي Senators decry inadequate health facilities in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: The Senate was informed that in a year a staggering 2.2587 million patients visited the out-patient departments of already crumbling Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and Federal Government Polyclinic Hospital (FGPH), showing a massive rush of patients to these hospitals built several decades ago for a modest population.

In response to a question by ANP’s Muhammad Daud Achakzai during the question hour on Thursday, Minister for Capital Administration and Development Division Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said that in 2014-2015, a total of 1,045,981 were entertained at PIMS’s OPD.

ANP, MQM and PkMAP Senators decried the apathy of the rulers over the years in **t taking care of these hospitals of the federal capital and **t upgrading and enhancing their capacity to handle mounting number of patients.

As many as 233,070 and 257,191 patients, the minister explained, were provided emergency services during these two years. Moreover, blood bank services were also provided to 89,132 and 127,954 patients.

The minister conceded that these two hospitals were built several decades ago for a limited population, which had multiplied over the years whereas the services at these hospitals deteriorated due to large number of patients and equipment suffering wear and tear.

He also admitted that the cooling and heating system at the PIMS, installed in 1980s had stopped working and a new one was to be installed for which PC-I had been submitted to the concerned authorities for approval.

Moreover, he added the long-pending expansion of the hospital was also to be undertaken shortly besides expansion of the FGPH for which land, where Argentina Park stood, had been acquired and its possession given to the hospital.

“There is a proposal for extension of FGPH for this purpose, a piece of land of 2.54 acres adjacent to the hospital has been acquired and a feasibility study will be carried out soon and construction work will be started accordingly. After construction, the bed capacity will be increased from the existing 545 to 1,100 and allocation of Rs100 million as token allocation has been made in PSDP,” he explained.

About PIMS, he said that a 50-bed burn centre, a new improved mother and child centre, a new 200-bed gynecology centre, a new 100-bed trauma centre, a new OPD of 150 consulting rooms and a 200-bed children hospital’s new block with a 50-bed central ICU and a new operation theatre complex will be held as per direction of the prime minister.
