Tata Motors counts losses after Tianjin explosions
Tata Motors counts losses afterTata Motors has stated that ‘many’ of its 5,800 Jaguar Land Rover vehicles held at the Port of Tianjin in China, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, were damaged in the recent chemical explosion that killed more than a hundred people. “Tianjin Port is one of three major locations in China through which JLR imports vehicles. At the time of the explosion, about 5,800 vehicles that had recently been shipped to China were stored at various locations in Tianjin,” read a corporate statement, adding: “Jaguar Land Rover wishes to express its most profound condolences to the families and friends of those who lost loved ones in the explosions in Tianjin. Our thoughts are with them as well as with all those who were injured in this tragic event." In all, as many as 10,000 vehicles from various manufacturers are believed to have been destroyed or damaged in the explosion at Tianjin, China’s largest import hub. Tata Motors joins auto makers including BMW, Daimler, Hyundai, Toyota and Volkswagen, Tata Motors in report losses, though the full extent of the damage remains unk**wn, as access to the site of the explosion is still restricted. Renault has said the blast burned 1,500 of its imported cars while Volkswagen said 2,700 of its cars were damaged. According to the Xinhua news agency, one of the ignition points for the ****** of blasts came from within an automobile distribution area near the blast site while three were within the central blast area – a warehousing area for volatile chemicals toxic chemical. In the immediate aftermath of the reported loss, which comes at a time of already reduced demand in China, shares in Tata Motors fell by more than 4%, and closed nearly 3% lower in a weak Mumbai market. “We will continue to monitor the situation and work to minimise the impact on our customers and the business,” Tata Motors added.
