RTA keen to work with US firms for future projects
keen work with firms futureH.E. Mattar Al Tayer, director general and chairman of the board of executive directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) met with H.E. Arun Kumar, assistant secretary of commerce for global markets at USA’s Department of Commerce to explore the scope for cooperation between the RTA and American firms to work on Dubai Metro, rail, roads and other transport projects. During the meeting, which took place during the first week of June 2015, both parties also discussed the road and public transport projects which the RTA intends to carry out in the near future. Investment prospects open for the private sector in roads and public transport projects, which the RTA plans to achieve by the year 2020, were also on the agenda. The RTA’s plan involves the construction of roads spanning over 100 kilometres, as well as bridges and crossings on the Dubai Creek, and ring roads circling existing or future developments and activity areas. “Over the next few years, the RTA will be embarking on the construction and operation of rail projects costing billions of dirhams,” Al Tayer said. “These projects include Route 2020, which involves the extension of the (Dubai Metro’s) Red Line to the exhibition yard of Expo 2020, and the extension of the Green Line of the Dubai Metro, as well as Phase II of the Dubai Tram project. “Future projects offer a great opportunity for businesses to bid in tenders released by the RTA, and we are contemplating releasing such projects on the basis of the public-private partnership (PPP) model, comprising elements attractive for the private sector to take the initiative and bear the costs of such projects against benefiting from the project’s returns over the contract period,” Al Tayer continued. The meeting was also attended by Robert Waller, American consul general in Dubai, Jim Cramer, desk ******r at the ****** of the Middle East and **rth Africa in Washington DC, and a host of RTA officials, MENA Rail Post reported. “The US is seeking to foster strong relationships with the UAE and raising bilateral trade to higher levels,” Kumar said. “The meeting offered a superb opportunity to share experiences between American firms and the RTA as regards constructing and managing the infrastructure of roads and public transport,” he added.
