Final Destination 3?s original ending would have delivered a major twist

Final Destination 5 stunned fans with its ending, which tied into the first movie’s plane crash, but â?? it turns out â?? the series almost pulled a similar trick in Final Destination 3.

The third movie ends with Wendy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Julie (Amanda Crew) and Kevin (Ryan Merriman) on a subway train. Wendy experiences another premonition of the train derailing and the three of them try to stop the train.

They fail and, as it cuts to black, we hear the train crash and presume that the three survivors are killed.

And it turns out that there were set to be two more recognisable victims on board.

Talking to Digital Spy, producer Craig Perry revealed that Final Destination 3 could have tied into the second movie if an alternate plan had panned out.

On that same ill-fated subway train, Wendy, Julie and Kevin were going to be joined by Kimberly (AJ Cook) and Officer Burke (Michael Landes), the two survivors from Final Destination 2.

“They were going to die to tie the whole thing up to Final Destination 2. I loved the idea and we had it scripted and were going to try it. We were able to get one of the two actors who were available, but the other one wasn’t,” Perry recalled.

“If we couldn’t do it all the way, we decided it was best not to do it. To have just one of them leaves an open ending which would make no sense in Death’s overarching plan.

“So we pocketed it because we knew that there was a really interesting idea about the cause and effect in the world of Final Destination, and then it managed to perfectly land in Final Destination 5.”

While Kimberly and Officer Burke are still technically alive in the Final Destination universe, another alternate ending to the third movie did kill the duo off.

For its home release, Final Destination 3 had a Choose Their Fate way of watching the movie, an interactive version of the movie where viewers could choose how certain scenes played out.

One of the endings to this showed a newspaper article about Kimberly and Officer Burke’s deaths, where the duo ended up as victims of an unfortunate woodchipper incident.

But in the only canon timeline, the duo (presumably) lived to fight another day and successfully cheated Death.

They didn’t appear in The Final Destination and, as fans know, Final Destination 5 actually takes place before the first movie as we realise in the Final scene when Sam (Nicholas D’Agosto) and Molly (Emma Bell) board the doomed Flight 180.

We might have had to wait two further movies after Final Destination 3 for the surprise twist, but the ending to the fifth movie proved that the franchise was right to wait.
