Pokأ©mon Meets ?Breath Of The Wild? In This Ambitious New RPG
The recently-released Pokأ©mon Sword/Shield were thoroughly enjoyable, solid games. Unfortunately in the eyes of many – including my own – Game Freak’s latest effort just wasn’t the evolution the long-running series so desperately needed. For those of us that grew up with the franchise, the “dream” is seeing a true open world experience – one with an engaging, properly fleshed out narrative that sticks in the memory. These weren’t things that the latest Pokأ©mon games delivered – and maybe that’s fine! They certainly sold incredibly, and the franchise will always be for a younger audience first and foremost. But what about us older Pokأ©mon fans who crave a “deeper” experience? Fortunately it seems we have an answer. As spotted by Kotaku, <em/>Kindred Fates is a new open world RPG from indie studio Skymill that looks like a promising blend of Pokأ©mon and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This Kickstarter-funded project smashed its goal in just five days, and at the time of writing has nearly raised آ£100,000. Kindred Fates is described by Skymill Studios as a “love letter to the monster-battling genre”. It promises to “evolve” the well-worn genre and “finally deliver what fans have been asking for,” in an apparent reference to Pokأ©mon. Whether or not the game can deliver on these lofty promises obviously remains to be seen, but you can’t fault the team’s ambition. The game takes place in a region called Hinterlock, a vast region surrounded by forests, fields, lakes, and oceans. Players will be able to train and raise creatures called Kinfolk, travelling the open world with them and battling enemies in real-time combat. As with Pokأ©mon, you can evolve your Kinfolk. However, unlike Pokأ©mon, these monsters will have evolution trees, growing and changing depending on your choices and preference. A number of Kinfolk have already been designed, and you can see them over on the game’s Kickstarter page. Skymill Studios also touched on its plans for the game’s story and themes. The team wants to make a more “mature” game with “thought-provoking storytelling, antagonists with a sympathetic cause, and compelling character development.” They also teased “morally ambiguous decisions, and living with the consequences of your actions.” On living with the consequences of your actions, it seems that you’ll be able to lose your Kinfolk forever if they fall in battle. If one of your partners loses a fight, you have a limited time to revive them before their souls fades. Fail to do so, and you’ve lost ’em for good. There’s even an in-game memorial where you can and pay tribute to your fallen pals, which is a pretty interesting idea.  Credit: Skymill Studios There are also plans for 1v1 and 2v2 PvP matchmaking and online trading, as well as a bevy of customisation options, You’ll be able to change your own appearance, and every player starts off in a house that can fully kit out and decorate themselves. What I will say is that it sounds exactly like the Pokأ©mon game a lot of us have been dreaming about for years now. With that said, Kickstarter-funded projects do have a habit of promising more than they can deliver, so it’s probably best to temper our expectations for now. I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on Kindred Fates, and I genuinely hope Skymill Studios is able to deliver on its Ambitious vision.
