The Suicide Squad set pics suggest a major DC villain

The Suicide Squad is having a grand old time (we assume) filming in Panama. The not-a-sequel follow-up to 2016’s Suicide Squad sees plenty of the original cast returning.

As a total reboot, not a sequel, there are plenty of DC Comics plot lines writer-director James Gunn could explore. Some theories hint at multiple Suicide Squads, while others speculate that most of the cast will be killed off within the very beginning of the film.

Very little about the movie has been confirmed, despite Gunn teasing little tidbits here and there on his social channels. However, set photos from Panama posted to Twitter have revealed a likely foe The Suicide Squad could take on.

Fans have noticed that the flag in the photo could be either Santa Prisca or Corto Maltese. Many see the Santa Prisca flag as a hint that the baddie will be Bane (yes, that Bane) â?? which seems pretty unlikely.

What lent credence to the Bane-as-baddie angle was the rumour that Dave Bautista was eyeing a role in The Suicide Squad and always wanted to play Bane. However, Bautista couldn’t take the role due to scheduling conflicts. Besides which, we’ve already had a Bane that can’t be topped (don’t @ us).

The second location teased is the fictional island off the coast of South America called Corto Maltese. This island is referenced in the comic series The Dark Knight Returns, the movie Batman (1989)<em/>, and the TV shows Smallville and Arrow.

But either of these locations actually teases the same baddie: King Kobra and his cult.

In the comics, Kobra goes up against Amanda Waller’s Suicide Squad in a few editions of the Convergence storyline. In this storyline, which ran in April and May of 2015, a mysterious ‘Kobra’ takes the mantle of King and leads the Kobra Cult.

In the Convergence storyline, the Suicide Squad going up against King Kobra’s forces. In the second volume of Suicide Squad Most Wanted: Deadshot and Katana, they rescue a girl named Anna from baddies.

In the third volume, they sneak aboard King Kobra’s ship to rescue an alien Aurakle kidnapped by Kobra. The fourth volume sees them all captured by King Kobra, but not for long. Eventually, they escape with a character named Doctor Jace.

Setting aside this storyline (which we acquiesce has nothing to do with the island except that Deadshot starts volume one in South America) let’s say the filming takes place in Santa Prisca â?? in Young Justice, Kobra himself takes over the Santa Prisca prison to make Venom (no, not that Venom).

Though Kobra has no run-ins with Task Force X in Young Justice, there’s plenty of precedent for mixing of storylines (it happens in plenty of comics-based movies). All this to say, there’s plenty of canon history between The Suicide Squad and the Kobra Cult, so we wouldn’t be surprised if it featured one way or another.

The Suicide Squad is out in cinemas on August 6, 2021.
