LAHORE: The Women Action Forum (WAF), Lahore, has endorsed the judgment of the special court in the case against former president General Pervez Musharraf.
“The judgment underscores the sanctity of the Constitution which has for too long been treated as a mere ‘piece of paper to be thrown in the dustbin’ by various military dictators throughout our history,” said a statement issued by the WAF.
The WAF statement noted with dismay that calls to drag people on streets and publicly hang them in D-Chowk have been made on the floor of the house and on public forums by our lawmakers.
The WAF said Musharraf’s years of service prior to the declaration of emergency, regardless of how honourable they might have been, have no bearing on the merits of this case. "Dissent is being criminalised and the practice of enforced disappearances has taken on monstrous proportions. If the government felt that the due process is not being followed, it had 15 months to withdraw its case against Musharraf. As it stands, we are faced with a ridiculous situation in which the prosecuting party (i.e. the government) having ‘won’ its case, is now challenging the judgment. We remind the government that its leaders have time and again demanded a treason trial and death penalty for Musharraf,” the statement said.Attempts to block the judgment, threaten the judiciary and take the judge to the SJC are intimidation tactics designed to subjugate the judiciary. The WAF stands by its longstanding position on the supremacy of democratic institutions. In a democratic society, sovereignty belongs to people. “The constitution is the embodiment of this principle of democratic sovereignty and the supreme court’s judgment restores it to its rightful place in our polity.”
