FAA has no plans to ground Boeing 737 Max airliners; software fix expected in April

U.S. aviation regulators said they have no current plans to ground Boeing Co.â??s 737 MAX airliners following the deadly crash in Ethiopia, and expect by the end of April to mandate a software fix for an automated flight-control system that played a central role in the recent Lion Air crash of the same model.

In an update on Ethiopian Airlines crash, the Federal Aviation Administration told regulators and airlines worldwide: â??This investigation has just begun and to date we have not been provided data to draw any conclusions or take any actions.â?*

That stands in contrast to decisions by regulators in China and Indonesia, where the Lion Air crash occurred, to temporarily ground all 737 MAX variants following Sundayâ??s crash, which killed all 157 people on board. Several airlines have also decided unilaterally to stop flying the airplane model for the time being.

آ* and the FAA plan to release will limit the downward push of the automated system implicated in last yearâ??s Lion Air crash, the agency said. The software fix is being issued in conjunction with updates to certain pilot-training and crew manuals to stress the details of the stall-prevention system and how to turn it off in case of a malfunction.
