In social terms, many organisations, groups and individuals work to close obvious gaps in the world around us. At the federal level, Closing the Gap is the title of a government program to improve the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Those who provide humanitarian aid to thousands of needy people, who fight discrimination in all its forms, who advocate for those who sleep on our streets, are all addressing gaps. Community diversity is frequently perceived as a collection of gaps. Cultures, values, languages, religions, political views, educational backgrounds, occupations, age groups; all have the potential to divide rather than unite, to diminish rather than enrich. For some, the distance between life as they experience it and one which has meaning and purpose is a gap they find impossible to bridge, with often tragic consequences. The margin between hopelessness and faith can be surprisingly small. Minding that particular gap, in the sense of nurturing it, is to recognise that spiritual health is a fundamental part of mental health and that faith informed by wonder and reason can be a rich source of hope.
