LeBron James Says He Won?t “Shut Up and Dribble”

The admonition to “stick to sports” is thrown in the face of any athlete who dares to have an opinion. But Fox’s Laura Ingraham brought that sentiment into the realm of out-and-out racism earlier this week, calling LeBron James’ easily understood thoughts on President Trump “barely intelligible,” and saying he should just “Shut up and dribble.” Of the all-black trio of James, Kevin Durant, and journalist Cari Champion, Ingraham asked, “Must they run their mouths like that?”

Ingraham released a statement saying that her monologue had “no racial intent.” Still, Durant told USA Todaythat to him, Ingraham’s segment “was racist.”

Dwayne Wade tweeted that the segment was an example of the ways in which racist discourse has flourished in the Trump era.

During a media session Saturday, James responded to Ingraham’s comments:

We will definitely not shut up and dribble. I will definitely not do that. I mean too much to society, I mean too much to the youth, to so many kids who feel like they don’t have a way out, and they need someone to help lead them out of the situation that they’re in. That’s why I will not shut up and dribble, because I mean too much to my two boys here, their best friend here, my daughter that’s at home, my wife my family, and all these other kids that look up to me for inspiration.
