 Rita Moreno was left stunned after Steven Spielberg invited her to be a part of the West Side Story remake. The 87-year-old actress played Anita in the 1961 Film adaptation of the Broadway musical, alongside Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer and Russ Tamblyn. The musical drama followed the tragic love Story of Tony and Maria, teenagers from rival New York City gangs the Jets and the Sharks, and won 10 Oscars, including Best Picture. Moreno, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the musical, revealed that she was in shock when the legendary director called her to be a part of the new movie, starring Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler. “I don’t even know what words to say. I can tell you that when I spoke to Steve Spielberg on the phone I damn near wet my pants,” she laughed to Entertainment Tonight. Moreno explained that in the remake she will be playing Valentina, the wife of the candy store owner in the original movie. “What they did, which I thought was pretty clever, you know the candy store where the kids would hang out, the gangs, was run by a man named Doc. Well Doc is gone. He probably passed away and his wife Valentina is now running the candy store,” she explained. While she still hasn’t met the young stars of Spielberg’s remake, including Ariana DeBose who will play Anita, Moreno said she’s “dying to meet” everyone involved. And she’s excited about the effort Spielberg and screenwriter Tony Kushner are putting into “trying to make right some of the wrongs in the original movie”. “Every single Shark (is) Puerto Rican,” she shared. “Now, I would’ve settled for Hispanic. They could’ve been from anywhere. They killed themselves and they have done that all the way through the script.
