   The official start of summer may be June 21, but Memorial Day weekend is the u**fficial kickoff to the season. In 1971, United States Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday, and scheduled it on the last Monday in May. Expedia also analyzed flight data, which produced slightly different results for the most popular cities.
