"WFP food security analysts say rainfall since September has been less than half the long-term average," the agency said in a report. "Wheat production is expected to be between 1.7 to 2 million metric tonnes, which would be a record low, further increasing import requirements to meet Syria's wheat needs that last year stood at 5.1 million tonnes." "Livestock and pastoral livelihoods will also suffer as a result of water shortages and poor pasture availability," the report added. Around nine million people in Syria are believed to require humanitarian assistance because of the brutal conflict that has ravaged the country.
