Traders stage sit-in against police From Our Correspondent

MULTAN: More than 300 traders staged a sit-in at Chowk Kumhanranwala against police that allegedly failed to provide protection to the locals from robbers and thieves.

The sit-in was staged on the call of All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajran chairman Khawaja Shafiq Ahmad.

The protesting traders demanded the government provide foolproof security to businessmen.

The traders raised slogans and urged the authorities concerned to trace robbers, who looted a jewellery shop at Piran Gaib. They appealed to the Punjab Chief Minister to take **tice of the increasing crime in the city.

Addressing the traders, Khawaja Shafiq said police have failed in extending security to traders and arresting Piran Gaib robbers.

Talking to The News, acting City Police ******r Dr Rizwan Ahmed Khan said overall crime rate has reduced in the City and police are working to improve law and order situation in the outskirts.

He said police have traced a bank robbery and recovered the looted amount. Dr Rizwan claimed finding significant clues into Piran Gaib robbery case, adding that the Qutabpur and Timber Market robbers have been arrested.

GENDER EQUALITY STRESSED: Speakers at a workshop said gender equality is vital to formulate a prosperous and progressive society and nation. They called for halting gender-based violence and discrimination with an iron hand.

The workshop was organised an NGO. Addressing the workshop Hyacinth Peter said we can**t live with gender inequality and called for serious efforts to end inequality. MPA Haji Ahsanuddin Qureshi said the bricks kiln workers are vulnerable but they are an important segment of society.

The workshop trainer Saima Ali said gender equality refers to equal access to social goods, services and resources and equal opportunities in all spheres of life for both men and women. Civil society activists, including Ayub Sajid, Fr Naveed Imran, Athar Jahania, Naeem Haroon, Habeeba Iftikhar, Fiaz Amin, Azmat Hidayat, Razia Eric, Mukhtar Sabir also spoke.
