Stepping in front of a self-driving car is the automotive equivalent of a trust fall. You believe the car can see you and does **t plan to run you down, but you can’t catch the eye of a driver, since whoever is sitting in the driver’s seat is **t actually in control — or paying attention. There’s ** **d or wave, or even a “good day” smile. Stepping off the curb and crossing the street while the intelligent vehicle purrs at the intersection is a leap of faith.
It shouldn’t be. Self-driving cars will, by at least one measure, save thousands of lives and billions of dollars. But that does little to console those who find the idea of driverless cars creepy. The reality is, though, that there is almost ** scenario in which, at least in the near term, robot cars will **t mix with people. And that could cause some problems. Read more...
