افتراضي Opposition seeks NA Speaker?s guarantee for govt flexibility

Revival of PanamaLeaks probe committee

ISLAMABAD: The joint Opposition on Wednesday told the National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq that accountability should be started from the prime minister and the government has to show flexibility on its stance as the Opposition had already shown the maximum flexibility.

The joint opposition, comprising Opposition Leader in the Senate Aitzaz Ahsan, PTI’s Shah Mehmood Qureshi, QWP’s Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao and Senator Mian Atiq of MQM, held a meeting with the NA Speaker. Before the meeting, the Opposition met to devise a strategy for a meeting with the prime minister.

During the meeting with Ayaz Sadiq, the Opposition also sought the guarantee of the NA Speaker that the government will show flexibility so that proceedings of the parliamentary committee on PanamaLeaks probe could be revived.

The Opposition agreed that the process of holding influential people accountable should start with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family.

Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Aitzaz Ahsan said that the Opposition could **t demonstrate more flexibility with the government on the issue of the terms of reference of the judicial commission that would hold the PanamaLeaks inquiry. “The Opposition can**t show further flexibility on the issue and the ball is in the government’s court,” he added.

Aitzaz said in the meetings of the parliamentary committee on thePanamaLeaks controversy to determine the terms of reference, the government showed zero flexibility. He disclosed that the government had presented their second draft of the terms of reference in which 75 percent of the demands had been met.

Aitzaz said the Opposition did **t accept the government’s proposed Inquiry Act 1856 for probing the PanamaLeaks and even in the new proposed amendment only one clause was added to it. “We summoned the meeting of the joint Opposition to discuss it and decide the future line of action,” he added.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Vice-Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, said that the stance of the Opposition had strengthened over a period of time. “The Opposition stands united on its stance,” he added.

In the meanwhile, according to sources, during the Opposition meeting, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah and Sheikh Rashid Ahmed exchanged harsh words when Sheikh Rashid remarked that Khursheed Shah had adopted a soft stance and was showing flexibility towards the government.

Khursheed Shah responded to Sheikh Rashid, “You adopted soft stance towards Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.”Sources said Sheikh Rashid responded to Khursheed Shah, “You leave your friendship with Nawaz Sharif and I can assure that Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan will **t speak against you.”

It may be mentioned here that the meeting had been held between Leader of the Opposition Syed Khursheed Shah and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday in which both had agreed on the formation of a new law to investigate the PanamaLeaks.
