افتراضي Four new ECP members take oath

ISLAMABAD: After remaining dysfunctional for about a month and half, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday became functional following the oath-taking of the Four newly-appointed members.

Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Sardar Muhammad Raza administered oath to Justice (retd) Altaf Ibrahim from Punjab, a bureaucrat Abdul Ghaffar Soomro from Sindh, Justice (retd) Irshad Qaiser from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Justice (retd) Shakeel Baloch from Balochistan.

Justice Irshad Qaiser is the only and first ever female member of the electoral body while of the Four new members, three have a judicial background. Prior to the 22nd constitutional amendment, only retired judges could be appointed members of the electoral body but **w persons with **n-judicial background can also qualify its newly-framed criterion to become its members.

The ECP had become dysfunctional following the completion of the term of its Four members on June 12 this year. However, this lacuna has been ******* by enacting legislation. **w, only two members of the ECP will retire while the other two will continue working.

The Supreme Court had given the federation July 27 as deadline to complete the ECP by appointing its Four provincial members. As per the 22nd constitutional amendment, ECP members have to be appointed within 45 days. Under Article 218 of the Constitution, the ECP consists of chief election commissioner and Four members, one from each province.

A 12-member parliamentary committee had thrashed out names of the ECP members after a ****** of meetings here marred by deadlocks on finalisation of names. The new look ECP is faced with a number of challenges and at the top is a string of disqualification references filed by PPP, PTI and other parties against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif with regards to the off-shore companies, owned by his three children, as revealed in the Panama Papers. The hearing into the references will start from today (Thursday).

These references were filed several days back but the incomplete ECP waited for induction of its Four members to take these up and other work. A**ther very important reference was filed by a PTI candidate from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa against the son-in-law of prime minister, MNA Captain (R) Muhammad Safdar. His rival has sought declaring his election null and void citing alleged concealment of information in his **mination papers filed for 2013 general election, mainly about his spouse Maryam Nawaz.
