Funerals of rebel soldiers, foreign visits of academicians banned; 99 generals charged over alleged role in attempted coup

ANKARA: Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared a three-month state of emergency following a failed coup.

Erdogan said on Wednesday that the measure is being taken to counter threats to Turkish democracy and wasn’t intended to curb basic freedoms. He spoke after a meeting with cabinet ministers and top security advisers.

“The decision has been made to declare a state of emergency for a period of three months,” he said at a news conference. He said the state of emergency is a measure “against the terror threat facing our country”.

He said democracy would **t be compromised in Turkey despite declaring a three month state of emergency in the wake of a coup. “We have never made compromises on democracy. And we will never make them.”

The insurrection by some military units was launched late Friday, but security forces and protesters loyal to the government quashed the rebellion. Erdogan says the pro-government death toll in the botched coup was 246.

State-run television in Greece says security checks have been heightened on the island of Symi following reports in the Turkish news media that fugitives from Turkey’s armed forces could try to reach the island in the wake of last week’s coup attempt. Citing Greek military sources, ERT reported late Wednesday that police patrols had been increased on the island in the east Aegean Sea, popular with Turkish day trippers. Coast guard patrols in the area were also increased, it said.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his government has urged Turkey to respect the rule of law as it moves against alleged plotters of its failed coup. Trudeau said Wednesday that he has raised his concerns with the Turkish government after the arrests of thousands of soldiers and police ******rs following the failed coup.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s main religious body has banned all imams in the country from holding services for military personnel killed supporting the attempted coup on July 15. The move comes amid sweeping purges that have left over 50,000 people dismissed or arrested.

Imams are ** longer allowed to lead prayers for “pro-coup soldiers who targeted our nation,” Anadolu Agency cited the Religious Affairs Directorate as saying. The ban does **t apply to those who took part in the coup unwittingly or under duress.

The Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet) employs an estimated 100,000 personnel, including all of Turkey’s 75,000 imams. Earlier on Tuesday, the Diyanet said it had dismissed 492 of its staff over what it described as “terrorism” links and suspected involvement in the coup attempt.

The Turkish government has launched a massive purge against those it suspected of participating in the attempted power grab and those connected to the organisation ofFethullah Gulen, a powerful Muslim cleric president Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuses of masterminding the coup.

Around 50,000 soldiers, police, judges, civil servants, and teachers have been suspended or detained. Turkey's High Education Board on Tuesday ordered the resignation of 1,577 deans at all universities, while the Education Ministry has suspended more than 26,000 employees.

Ninety-nine of Turkey's roughly 360 military generals have been charged over their alleged roles in the attempted coup. A**ther 14 generals are still in detention. Turkey has also cut access to WikiLeaks, banned academics from travelling abroad and suspended 900 ******rs from the Ankara police force.

WikiLeaks was banned hours after leaking thousands of emails from Erdogan's ruling party, many of which were sent in the run-up to the coup attempt. The cache of nearly 300,000 AK Party emails was obtained before the plot to overthrow the government and dates from 2010 to 6 July this year.

WikiLeaks said it had brought forward publication 'in response to the government's post-coup purges,' which have seen around 50,000 public officials ******* from their jobs. Turkey's Telecommunications Communications Board said on Wednesday that an 'administrative measure' had been taken against the website - the term it commonly uses when blocking access to sites.

The travel ban for academics was an**unced by Turkey's High Board of Education and will apply until further **tice, state media reported. Academics who are already abroad were urged to return home urgently and university rectors have been asked to 'urgently examine the situation of all academic and administrative personnel linked with FETO' (Fethullah Terrorist Organisation) and report back by 5 August.
