In 1968, the Chilean-born photographer Camilo José Vergara moved to New York City after earning a degree in sociology at **tre Dame

He spent his spare time*while enrolled in a master’s program at Columbia*wandering impoverished uptown neighborhoods with his camera, capturing beautiful street photos of vibrant residents and crumbling spaces in then decaying neighborhoods of the city.

As Vergara's education progressed, he developed a technique to use photography **t just as an art form, but also as a more rigorous, systematic and even scientific tool to document the visual evidence of socioeco**mic forces at work. Read more...
