Govt allocates Rs42bln to Dasu Dam under PSDP

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has allocated Rs42 billion under Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the year 2016-17 for Dasu hydropower project, which would generate 4,500 megawatt of electricity.

Official sources in the Ministry of Planning Development and Reforms said on Monday that the PML-N government had pledged to resolve the chronic energy crisis in the country before coming into power, and had demonstrated its commitment when it was able to bring down the load shedding hours to 6-8 hours from 18-20 hours in 2013.

The development of indige**us energy resources, such as coal, hydro, and alternative and renewable sources was critical for sustainable eco**mic growth as envisaged in Vision 2025. As a result of the government’s continued focus on the energy sector, it was one of the major recipients of the federal PSDP share.

Dasu Dam, a gravity dam, was being constructed on the Indus River near Dasu in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The 242 meter (794 feet) tall dam would support a 4,320MW hydroelectric power station, which would be built in two 2,160MW stages.

Water from the reservoir would be diverted to the power station located about 3.5 kilometres downstream. The first stage was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Eco**mic Council on March 29, 2014. It would cost an estimated $4.278 billion.
