افتراضي Documentaries ?Posheeda Qadam?,?Androon Shaher? screened

Islamabad

Two Documentaries ‘Posheeda Qadam’ (Hidden Footsteps) and ‘Androon Shaher’ (Inner City) produced and directed by Nageen Hyat were screened at the Serena Hotel, sponsored by the hotel as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The ‘full house’ event was attended by a number of rights activists and students of schools and colleges, as well as some members of the Australian High Commission and German embassy, both of whom have helped in the making of documentaries. The guest of ho**ur was Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani.

‘Posheeda Qadam’ highlights the history of the struggle of women against domestic and cyber violence and discriminatory laws that affect women and mi**rities. Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani, Sherry Rehman, lawmakers and activists gave their opinion on the issues faced by women in Pakistan as well as the rest of South Asia, while the views of social scientist Kamla Bhasin from India were also included. It was refreshing to hear Raza Rabbani admit that even when his party was in power **thing concrete was done about women’s rights! “We all have to work together to project the injustices others are experiencing and do something about it,” he said praising the producer for her hard work in raising human rights issues.

Others who were interviewed said patriarchy is dehumanising, boys are **t born violent, it is society which makes them so, while the Australian High Commissioner, Margaret Adamson opined that the documentary deals in a sensitive manner with issues of gender inequality and women as well as men need to come together to address issues of violence and discrimination on a global level.

The second documentary depicted the life and crafts within the walls of Old Lahore, parts of which are being restored — a narrow street in the same area has been refurbished with support from the German embassy and the Aga Khan Foundation as part of making the area more attractive and comfortable to live in with the focus on modern amenities.

Speaking on the occasion Ambassador of Germany Ina Lepel said the embassy was proud to have contributed towards this effort. “We wanted to make the neighbourhood one that people would want to live in while retaining and enhancing its charm.”

General Manager Serena Michel Gallopin said the Documentaries were moving but they also convey diverse aspects of Pakistan, which is interesting. “I was glad to see the Mashal School in Bari Imam featured as it is a project Serena has supported and will continue to support in the future,” he said.

Nageen Hyat thanked everyone for their presence especially those who had come from out of the city. “After thirty years of protests in which very few persons participated I decided to take up documentary making as films have a better outreach,” she said, “It’s pretty lonely out there when there are just a handful of sympathizers raising their voices against injustice and other human rights issues.”
