Five reasons to be cheerful about WWE’s Divas division

Five reasons cheerful about WWE’s**t since The Godfather joined the Right to Censor and derailed his Ho-Train have so many women left WWE in such a short amount of time. The Divas are dropping like attractive flies, with The Bellas, Kelly Kelly, Beth Phoenix, Kharma (Awesome Kong) and most recently Eve Torres all parting ways with the company in recent months.

When the aforementioned Godfather culled his ladies of the night, they started a campaign called “Save The Ho’s”. Perhaps it’s time to start up a**ther similar protest group called “Save The Divas”? It’s **t all doom and gloom though, as there are still a few things we enjoy about the depleted division. Join us as we look at the reasons to be cheerful about the Divas division…
1. Strength in small numbers

OK, so there’s **t many left, but there is a decent amount of talent on the roster.

Kaitlyn recently became Divas Champion for the first time. Image source: WWE.com.

Should WWE decide to feature them a little more regularly, the likes of Natalya, Tamina Snuka and Layla are very talented and make up a great spine of power, finesse and charisma.

Current Divas Champion Kaitlyn is developing into a vital part of the division, and whilst AJ Lee isn’t really being used much in the ring, she’s a vital cog in some huge storylines.

Add heat magnet Vickie Guerrero and the underutilised Alicia Fox into the mix and whilst it’s clearly a sparse roster there’s certainly a wealth of talent.
2. The rise of the Anti-Diva

The one place there is currently a healthy amount of female competition is down in the Indie wrestling fan’s wet dream that is NXT. This next generation of Divas is spearheaded by our very own Paige (or Britani Knight as you may k**w her) who, if utilised correctly, could very well become the face of the division. Big things are expected from this talented youngster, and anybody who has seen her before her big break or in her fleeting appearances on NXT can tell you why. She’s certainly **t the atypical Diva but this is something that can very much work in her favour.
3. Del Rey of light

Talking of NXT Divas, how can you fail to mention their latest trainer? Whilst it’s pretty much a travesty that she’s **t being used as an in-ring competitor, the fact that Sara Del Rey is helping nurture the next generation of Divas is very encouraging. Sara has to be considered as one of the greatest female competitors perhaps of all time, and just to be able to impart some of the wisdom she has acquired from a lifetime of world class competition is a godsend. The NXT Divas have a fantastic opportunity to to learn from a female with a fantastic wrestling brain, and hopefully some of that Del Rey magic will rub off on them.
4. K**w your role, models

The transition from Attitude to PG has been especially hard on The Divas. It meant an end to the Playboy deals and the swimsuit specials, which whilst **t everybody’s cup of tea, did offer an extra avenue of exposure (pun probably intended). Whether you agree with it or **t, ***uality has always been a big draw in the division, and whilst this hasn’t been completely *******, it has been reined in. So whilst we still have characters like AJ who seems to be sleeping her way to the top (in the storylines!), we also have more positive representations of the fairer *** like Layla and and Kaitlyn. That can only be a good thing for the increasingly young female fan base that **w watches WWE.
5. Learning from the k**ckouts

If TNA’s K**ckout division and WWE’s own Divas division of the early 2000´s has shown us anything, it’s that well-promoted womens matches can be big business. It wasn’t too long ago that TNA considered having a K**ckouts-only TV show or even a K**ckouts PPV (it could even happen in 2013 with the recent PPV changes). At one time, the K**ckouts matches were consistently the highest-rated segments of Impact. Even the resurgence of womens wrestling in Europe with the likes of Pro Wrestling EVE show that it’s possible to have a compelling modern Divas division. It wouldn’t take much at all to transform the fortunes of the Divas –* I’ve already stated that there’s still a great core group of talent available, after all. It’s just a simple case of giving them the platform on which to perform.

There’s ** denying that the Divas division is currently in pretty bad shape but there’s plenty to lead us to believe that it wouldn’t take much to resurrect it. The tag scene was all but dead in WWE twelve months ago, but with a bit of patience and an increased focus, it’s once again regaining popularity. There’s ** reason why this can’t be achieved with the women as well. I certainly hope so; as much as the division is often maligned, the Divas have been an integral part of WWE for so long and offer something different to the shows. Long may it continue.
