More Effective Pain Control
Boston Scientific received U.S. and European approval to bring to market the world’s first 32-contact leads, the
CoverEdge 32 and
CoverEdge X 32. They are compatible
with the company’s Precision Spectra spinal cord neurostimulator and take advantage of Illumina 3D anatomy-based software that accurately targets nerves to suppress
Pain signals moving up the spine. Previously, the largest contact count was 16, as in Boston Sci’s
Infinion 16 percutaneous lead.
The
CoverEdge 32 has a tight contact configuration, while the
CoverEdge X 32 is both wider and longer,
with the
Contacts spread out over a larger area. The latter has the largest
Effective area of any multi-column leads.

The combination of the CoverEdge Surgical Leads with the Precision Spectra SCS System and Illumina 3D Software is designed to deliver spinal cord stimulation in new ways. For example, a key challenge in SCS therapy is stimulating the neural target without stimulating undesired areas. By taking into account the conductivity of 3D anatomical structures and physician placement of the SCS leads, the Illumina 3D Software is designed for simple point-and-click Pain targeting.
