PARIS: US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Friday that the relocation of the US
embassy to
Jerusalem would
probably not take place for at least two years. ?This is not something that is going to happen this year or
probably not next year, but the president does want us to
move in a very concrete and steadfast way to ensure the
embassy is located in
Jerusalem when we?re able to do so, at the earliest possible time,? Tillerson said after talks in Paris with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian. France said on Friday the United States had sidelined itself in the Middle East by recognising
Jerusalem as Israel?s capital, but the EU?s top diplomat insisted Washington remains a mediator as Europe struggled for unity in its diplomacy. US President Donald Trump?s decision to
move the US
embassy in Israel to
Jerusalem revived old tensions between EU governments that want to see peace in the Middle East but have varying degrees of sympathy towards Israel and the Palestinians. ?I hear some, including Mr Tillerson, say things will happen in time and the hour is for negotiations. Until now (the US ) could have had a mediation role in this conflict, but it has excluded itself a little,? French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said, referring to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who is in Paris for talks after visiting Brussels and Vienna.
