When the Republican National
convention convened at the Cow Palace arena in Daly City, California in July 1964, party moderators were staging a last-ditch effort to block the **mination of an insurgent, right-wing candidate.
By the conclusion of the hotly contested primary season, Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater was just a handful of pledged delegates away from being able to clinch the **mination on the first ballot.
