Islamabad: While forecasting
widespread monsoon
rains from Saturday to Monday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department on Thursday warned heavy downpour could cause floods in big cities and flash floods in vulnerable areas of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the period.
A PMD official told ‘The News’ on Thursday that a fresh westerly wave was expected to approach the upper parts of the country on
Saturday to cause rains.
He said under the influence of those meteorological conditions,
widespread rain-thundershowers with isolated heavy falls accompanied by strong gusty winds were expected in Islamabad and upper Punjab including Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sargodha and Faisalabad divisions
from Saturday to Monday, while scattered rain-thundershowers would fall in central and southern Punjab including Multan, Sahiwal, Dera Ghazi Khan and Bahawalpur divisions during the period.
According to him,
widespread rain-thundershowers with isolated heavy falls accompanied by strong winds are expected in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Mardan, Kohat, Bannu and Dera Ismael Khan divisions; in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s areas including Muzaffarabad, Mirpur and Poonch divisions, and in FATA’s Khurram, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, and **rth and South Waziristan agencies
from Saturday to Monday.
Likewise, scattered rain-thunderstorm is expected in Gilgit-Baltistan during the period.The weatherman warned the Monsoon
rains coupled with glacier-melt water could result in the outburst of some glacial lakes in Chitral, Gilgit, Ghizer and Shigar areas.
He also said heavy downpour might generate
flooding in big cities and flash floods in vulnerable areas of Punjab and KP
from Saturday to Monday.“All authorities concerned are advised to remain alert during the period,” he said.
