Massive wildfire fueled by record heat and low humidity threatened the Alberta oil boomtown of Fort McMurray on Tuesday evening, prompting the largest wildfire-related
evacuation in the province's history.*
Officials have ordered the
entire city of Fort McMurray, with a population of about 61,000, to evacuate. The
city is located about 270 miles (435 kilometers) **rtheast of Edmonton, Alberta.
The fire exploded in size on a day when temperatures soared 40 degrees Fahrenheit (23 degrees Celsius) above average for this time of year following a relatively dry winter.*The average high temperature on May 3 in Fort McMurray is 58.28 degrees Fahrenheit (14.6 degrees Celsius).
