D-day looms for actor Ricky Tomlinson’s bid to be selected as the Socialist Labour
 

</p> ACTOR Ricky Tomlinson should know by the middle of next week whether he will be standing for Parliament.

The Royle Family star caused a sensation on Friday when he exclusively revealed to the ECHO that he would consider standing in Liverpool Wavertree for the Socialist Labour Party.

He is unhappy about Labourâ??s selection of 28-year-old Londoner Luciana Berger â?? and said, if he is chosen to stand, his campaign slogan could be â??Berger? My arse!â?*, in tribute to his TV character Jim Royle.

â??Iâ??m filming this week, but the Socialist Labour Party is hoping to arrange a selection meeting in Liverpool next week â?? on Wednesday, probably,â?* Tomlinson told the ECHO.

â??I love Liverpool and the people of Liverpool, but I am just one of quite a few people who have put themselves forward. But, if selected, I would be delighted to stand and fight for that area.â?*

The news that the 70-year-old could end up battling to become an MP has made national headlines and prompted a flurry of letters to the ECHO â?? and the actor added: â??Iâ??m sure Iâ??m getting a lot of support â?? and a lot of flak as well. But weâ??ll have a go and see what happens.â?*

If he does end up standing, it is sure to increase the already intense public and media focus on the seat in the run-up to the election campaign.

Miss Berger, the director of Labour Friends Of Israel, has been surrounded by controversy since she was chosen to fight Wavertree two weeks ago.

She beat Liverpool councillor Wendy Simon and Joyce Still by a margin of around 2-1 to win the candidacy from an all-women shortlist.

Walton Labour MP Peter Kilfoyle later branded her a student politician while she could not say who Anfield legend Bill Shankly was or who sang Ferry Across the Mersey.
