Marvel?s Shang-Chi: Victoria Park says Simu Liu is perfect for MCU superhero role
 

Last summer at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel finally announced that Simu Liu would be taking on the role of Shang-Chi â?? and for Victoria Park, there is nobody more suited to play the MCU’s first Asian lead superhero.

Park currently stars in superhero show The Flash as Kamilla Hwang, but two years ago she and Liu starred together in comedy-drama series Yappie.

“I’m so excited!” Park said in an interview with Digital Spy, when asked about Liu’s MCU casting. “I know that the news has been out for nearly a year now, but I think it’s so really exciting and I think no one can do it better than Simu. He is just the best.

“He is a very dedicated, serious actor. He works harder than anybody I know, and he’s also very open about his struggles of being an Asian American man in this industry and just in general. I think he has done a lot and said a lot for the Asian American community, so to have him representing us in this way is so exciting.

“And then personally, as a friend, I am of course so excited for him being in the Marvel universe in such a big way. It’s an actor’s dream.

“I think he’ll bring everything he’s got to the role. I know he will. I’m super excited to see the movie. I know it’s going to be great, and I’m excited for kids growing up to see themselves represented in that way. That’s a thing I didn’t have growing up, and I think it will be really powerful.”

Yappie, produced by Wong Fu Productions and released on YouTube in 2018, centred on the Asian American experience, touching on a number of social and racial issues. The web series also featured a majority Asian cast and crew.

Park had nothing but positive things to say about her time filming the series, explaining that working on a set mostly filled with Asian people really resonated with her.

“It’s a big thing. When I think about it too hard, I get kind of emotional about it,” she commented. “You never realise how out of place you feel until you see people who look like you, and you’re like, ‘Oh man, that was a hole I didn’t realise I had’.

“Working with people like Wong Fu, who tend to have a majority Asian cast and crew is like a safe haven and place to work from, and I’m always looking for opportunities like that. It’s refreshing and it feels like home.”

While her Yappie co-star prepares for his dream role, Park has her own superhero that she would love to play one day â?? Marvel’s Cindy Moon aka Silk.

“I know I’m in the DC universe but I’ve always wanted to play Silk in the Marvel universe,” she said. “She’s Korean-American, she’s a total badass, and I’ve always loved Spider-Man. She’s basically the female Spider-Man but better, so I think that would be a dream of mine to play.”

2020 looks to be an exciting year for Park. In addition to continuing to appear in The Flash, which is coping with the aftermath of the game-changing ‘Crisis’ event, the star recently directed a short film that she’s excited to share.

“I actually started on the other side of the camera. So this year, I told myself I was going to focus more on directing and getting back on the other side of the camera,” she explained. “Hopefully I will be doing a lot more of that.

“I’ve got a short film on the festival circuit, so we’ll see what comes from that.

“It’s called To Borrow, to Keep. It’s about a Cantonese American woman dealing with the guilt and shame of her uncle’s gambling addiction.

“It’s kind of a story between her and her mother, and how she eventually finds the strength to speak up about this addiction and the shame that it’s brought on their family. And it’s a really, really touching story about the relationship of this family. It turned out really well, so I’m excited for people to see it.”

The Flash airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW in the US. Sky One and NOW TV air the show in the UK. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be released on February 12, 2021.
