Movies nominated for Oscars *and* Razzies
 

Heading into 2020’s Academy Awards, the tension was palpable. The Oscars had already fumbled big time when it came to representation in its major acting categories (nominating all white actors bar one, Cynthia Erivo) as well as its all-male directing category (again).

The night was saved from total ignominy by Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, which won four awards including Best Director and Best Picture â?? rejoice! Though everyone on Twitter was quick to point out that, though the win is historic and wonderful, there’s still a lot of work to be done with Awards systems.

There is, however, at least one awards ceremony that is fine just the way it is: The Golden Raspberry Awards, where movies are not nominated for their merit but their shortcomings.

But the crossover between the Oscars and Razzies, as they’re called, is wider than you might think.

Joker (2019)

Yep, the movie that won Joaquin Phoenix his Oscar is also nominated for a Golden Raspberry. The film was nominated for the “Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property” Golden Raspberry.

It’s a special category, introduced in select years depending on the films released. This year, Joker has the honour of being nominated alongside the likes of Hellboy and Rambo: Last Blood, amongst others. Previous nominees for the award include ConAir, Batman & Robin, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Turbulence and Volcano.

Wall Street (1987)

The only movie to win at both ceremonies is Wall Street, but before you get excited, it wasn’t the same award. Michael Douglas won Best Actor, but Daryl Hannah won Worst Supporting Actress. Ouch.

Suicide Squad (2016)

The fact that Suicide Squad was nominated for makeup and hairstyling was a surprise to many. What wasn’t a surprise, though, was Jared Leto’s Worst Supporting Actor nomination, as well as David Ayerâ??s script nominated as Worst Screenplay.

Armageddon (1998)

Michael Bay’s Bruce Willis-starring space romp, Armageddon, was nominated for four Oscars, one of which was for Aerosmith’s ‘I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.’ (Sorry, we know you’ve got it stuck in your head now.)

Understandably (soz, Steven Tyler) the song was also nominated for Worst Original Song.

Batman Begins (2005)

Superhero movies are clear favourites of the Razzies. Batman Begins got three Oscar nominations and won one. Unfortunately, though, Katie Holmes was also nominated for Worst Actress for her role as Rachel Dawes.

The Godfather Part 3 (2990)

We know that The Godfather Part 3 isn’t the most famous, or well-liked, of the Francis Ford Coppola trilogy but it was still nominated for a whopping seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. It didn’t win any, but the nominations still stood as evidence that the film wasn’t all bad. [Narrator: “It was.”]The Godfather Part 3 did win at the Razzies: two nominations, in fact, and both for Sofia Coppola. They were for Worst Supporting Actress and Worst New Star. Oh well, she’s clearly doing alright for herself as a director, so who’s laughing now? Not James Cocoâ?¦

Only When I Laugh (1981)

James Coco was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and for the Razzie for Worst Actor in a Supporting Role â?? the same role, of Jimmy Perrino.

Yentl (1983)

Like Coco, Amy Irving was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar and a Worst Supporting Actress Razzie as Hadass Vishkower.

Honourable mention:

Sandra Bullock who, in 2010 won both the Oscar for Best Actress (The Blindside) and the Razzie for Worst Actress (All About Steve).
