Joanna Lumley?s new role: saving the environment

The 71-year-old former model and BAFTA award-winning star of Absolutely Fabulous, The Avengers and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service has blown into Australia with Queensland’s proposed Adani mega-mine in her sights. She is miffed by how Australia could let a global icon like the Great Barrier Reef be even remotely threatened by development and climate change.

“This is just unbelievable.*We’ve become so interested in making money and making everything productive. We need far fewer of everything.

“We all worry. It makes you sick. It makes you terrified to think some huge animal could go extinct in our lifetime and it won’t come as a huge shock to us because we knew this could happen.”


Lumley will spend a week in Australia narrating a*musical adaptation of David*Attenborough’s Blue Planet*II, a production she praises as a timely reminder of the wonders of the environment and the damage humans inflict on it.

“One thing we have discovered through the ages is that nature has a balance it knows how to deal with things,” Lumley says. “It can restore itself and mend itself even after the greatest damage it has a way of coming back again if we give it a chance.”

Would her hard-drinking, heavy-smoking*Ab Fab alter-ego Patsy Stone be as enthusiastic about the fight for nature?

“Patsy wouldn’t really grasp that at all … she’s not really there. Her brain has been too burnt out long ago.”
