Several sheep killed and injured in horrific dog attack on Welsh farm
 

A number of sheep, including newborn lambs, have been killed and injured in a horrific dog attack on a farm in west Wales.

Police were called to a farm in the Abercych area, near Cenarth, in Pembrokeshire on Monday afternoon.

Around a dozen sheep were either killed or injured as a result of the attack, which police have confirmed was carried out by dogs.

The violent nature of the attack means that images taken at the scene were too graphic to publish without being pixelated.

Itâ??s unclear how many dogs carried out the attack, but they have now been identified.

Their owner has been â??dealt withâ?* according to a tweet by the Rural Crime Team at Dyfed-Powys Police, who went on to explain that punishments can vary from words of advice to community resolutions, fines or court appearances.

A spokeswoman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: â??We received a report of the incident at around 1.45pm on Monday, March 4.

â??The matter was resolved between the two parties with no further police action required.â?*

In some circumstances, farmers are legally allowed to shoot any dog that is threatening livestock.

According to section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, it is a criminal offence to cause unnecessary suffering to animals.

However, one of the factors to be considered under the act is â??whether the conduct which caused the suffering was for legitimate purposes, such as the purpose of protecting a person, property or another animal.â?*
