The possibilities of what one can build with these little plastic brick are endless. 19-year old bioengineering student David Aguilar was born without a right forearm due to a rare genetic condition. He told Reuters how being different*never made him stop believing in his dreams. “As a child, I was very nervous to be in front of other guys because I was different, but that didn’t stop me believing in my dreams.”His love for LEGO has led him to build his own prosthetic*arm using these little bricks. His first attempt at creating one of these arms came when he was just 9-years-old. It was very simple in design and quite limited in what it could do. However, at the age of 18, he was able to build a more advanced prosthetic that had a moveable*elbow joint powered by an electric motor. Aguilar hopes to one day be able to create low-cost prosthetic legs and arms for people*who need them and wants people with disabilities to know that they too can reach their dreams and goals. “I would try to give them a prosthetic, even if it’s for free, to make them feel like a normal person. Because what is normal, right?”His latest LEGO prosthetic*allows him to pick up even heavier objects. Each iteration of his prosthetic*arm is marked as MK followed*by a number. This is in honour of his favourite*superhero, Iron Man, who also names his various sets of armoured suits using the same numeric system. Source link More |
