Have you ever successfully remouthed a horse or pony?

OK here's the thing. When I break my native ponies in I always take a long time mouthing them, especially if they have a slightly short mouth and I NEVER stuff a large driving bit into the mouth of a youngster. So after months of searching I have just found a very kind little three year old pony that has been broken in and is driving very sweetly through very heavy traffic, albeit with far too much trotting for my taste. However it is very unhappy in it's mouth as the owner is ignorant and rough with his hands and even admits he's not really a driver being self taught! My heart goes out to it - I would like to buy it and re-break it gently over the next twelve months going right back to lots of long reining. It really is a tolerant little animal - the videos show the bit being forced into its mouth BUT will it always be frightened of it's mouth and continue to go along with its mouth open throwing its head up every so often? My head says walk away while my heart says it will probably be sold to another rough ignorant person while I could give it a safe loving home. Oh what to do! Could I ever make it calm and responsive to the bit?
