Imran?s acquittal in SSP torture case challenged

ISLAMABAD: The state, through Advocate General, Islamabad, (AGI), Tariq Mehmood Jehangiri, has filed a criminal appeal in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the acquittal of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in Islamabad SSP Junejo torture case.An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) of Islamabad on May 4 acquitted Imran Khan in the case pertaining to 2014 sit-in when PTI protesters had badly beaten SSP Junejo up.In the appeal, the AGI said that the PTI chairman is the main accused in this matter. On the night of August 30, 2014, both the PTI and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) leadership delivered objectionable speeches and provoked their participants that if the government will not accept their demands there will be ‘Dama Dam Mast Qalandar’, and they will occupy the Parliament House and Prime Minister’s House. On September 1, 2014, the PTI and PAT protesters, armed with batons, hockey sticks and pelting bows, assaulted the police deployed under the supervision of SSP Junejo. The PTI and PAT protesters on the instigation of Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri assaulted Junejo and his police force. SSP Junejo received serious injuries, and he was admitted to PIMS. An FIR was then lodged at Secretariat police station under charges of terrorism beside other charges. The AGI has assailed the ATC judgement that had acquitted Khan from the charges. The petitioner contended that the acquittal order was issued without considering the available evidence as there exists sufficient documentary evidence in this regard in the form of videos and ocular accounts. The evidence was sufficient to connect the accused with crime, the AGI said in the petition. The petition says that the involvement of the PTI chief in the incident is quite obvious, and he was also named in the FIR. The ATC judge has not exercised its jurisdiction judiciously, and the reasons for acquittal are not in accordance with law and the court below has exercised its jurisdiction illegally and un-lawfully, the petition says. The petitioner has requested the court to set aside the May 4 judgement.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/com/cwEr/~4/q73iXNc-_Wc
