getting a horse to accept the bit
My mare,5 this time, has been broken about 5 months though we havent done much. I broke her myself, have broken many others and never had this problem before. I started off with an eggbut snaffle, fine for a while but then she started opening her mouth and playing with her tongue, not in resistance as she did it standing still with loose reins. Eventually she would get her tongue over so I had to get off and sort it out. I raised the bit in the mouth, but she still did it.I had her teeth done, and she still did it. Changed the eggbut for a fulmer, as I thought it would be more rigid and less tempting to play with. OK for a while but recently she started throwing her head about and messing with her mouth, not really while moving forwards smartly, more when turning or halting. Even with loops in the reins and steering with legs only.I have just changed to happy mouth peanut, with loose rings and bit rubbers which seems ok but Im not sure I have total control in this. She has a loose cavesson noseband and a running martingale.I dont really like flash or grakle nose bands, though I suppose maybe I should just try something like that for a while. Would standing her in her stable in side reins be any help? Could she be teething? The tongue over bit is a accidental result of her playing and messing, rather than the problem so I cant see a butterfly bit or rubber attatchment to the bit being the answer. Thanks for reading.
