Help desensitizing my mare to 'scary place'
Hello!Follow on from my last post where we established that my mare isn't actually napping but more scared of a certain area as she is absolutely fine hacking on her own everywhere else. Since Wednesday this week, I have gone up on my lunch break to lead her to said scary area where pigs are kept although you can't see them currently. I have been rating her out of 10, 10 being the scariest. First day it was definitely 10/10. She stopped a lot and was literally shaking, snorting the whole time, eyes bulging and tried turning around a few times. The second day I would say 9.5/10, I think... tried turning around a couple of times, still snorted the whole time and stopped a lot but not shaking.Today was a bit better, I think 8/10. She didn't snort or look at much until we were pretty much outside the farm where she did get a bit snorty but much easier to keep going without stopping or wanting to turn around. I just had a question:What do I do if when we get to said scary area and something else spooks her or there ends up being pigs there? I don't want it to be counterproductive and create more bad memories. There is another scary area too where there is normally a pig but its a bit further away so that'll be next on my list. It just concerns me that everywhere she's seen a pig now she doesn't want to go there and I don't want to end up not being able to ride her out alone at all. In the summer, the pigs are everywhere so it's hard to avoid them.Any advice appreciated!
