Not obviously lame but incredibly unwilling

Any ideas? Normally forward going (sometimes really too forward going!) turned lazy, really lazy. First noticed a week or so back, slower than normal pulling out of his stable in the morning, by the time we got to the field fine. I made a mental note to get a better joint supplement as thought he was stiff from stabling. Rode a few times last week, quiet but not worryingly so. On the Friday I was a little more concerned and planned to get someone to trot him up for me but felt fine. Yesterday just not at all willing to walk out. Cut hack short and came the quick way home (not on him of course!) The only thing I can find is maybe a bit of heat in both hinds but can't feel pulses in either (however he has been overdue a clip for some time and his legs are a little "loo brush")Not obviously lame but hard to trot up and watch properly alone. He's barefoot behind but has been worked barefoot before with no issues. Farrier is coming to refit hinds in case. Any ideas? Vet is booked, just pondering!
