Clerics reject monthly stipend as a bid to create rift
HANGU: Rejecting the monthly stipend announced by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, religious scholars on Tuesday alleged that the government wanted to create rift between the people and clerics. The announcement was made at a meeting held here. Member Provincial Assembly and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Mufti Said Janan chaired the meeting. The scholars claimed that billions of rupees had been spent during Musharraf era for "reforming" seminaries. They vowed to foil the conspiracy of the secular forces this time too. They said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government had become a tool for the anti-Islam forces to discredit the religious scholars. The scholars asked the government to show its sincerity by upgrading pay scale of ulema at public institutions and raise their salaries. They advised the government to utilise the funds in the Bus Rapid Transit Project to avoid borrowing from lending institutions. The meeting claimed that the anti-Islam forces through PTI wanted to silence the voice of religious scholars. They said that Wafaqul Madars had refrained ulema from accepting any kind of stipend from government.
