ISLAMABAD: Senator A. Rehman Malik, former Interior minister and chairman Senate Standing Committee on Interior has condemned the government?s decision of taking all news channels off air. He said that the decision has seriously dented the freedom of free press and will certainly provide a space to the propagandists to spread false information among the masses to make the situation further uncertain.

Rehman Malik has expressed grave concerns over the country?s current situation and has proposed the following 13-Points as a proposal to handle the ongoing deteriorating situation in the capital city of Islamabad, which is now spreading across the country.

1. The siege of Islamabad has symbolized the siege of the whole country, as Islamabad being the icon of Pakistan has been held hostage and the government looks helpless in handling the situation.

2. Islamabad has been turned into a remote village and government itself has become hostage and looks paralyzed.

3. The failure of operation to break up sit-in at Islamabad's Faizabad Interchange has disturbed the nation regarding the safety of the whole country, as Pakistan is already prime target of terrorists, India and other International anti-Pak forces.

4. The government should have taken the Parliament into confidence and should have announced an empowered Committee/Jirga of parliamentarians from all parties to help the government in resolving the situation with collective national efforts and response.

5. Unfortunately all the organs of the Government do not seem to be on one page to handle this issue with requisite professional approach and response.

6. Why the report of Raja Zafar-ul-Haq is not being made public, which can clear the ambiguity and helps defuse the situation.

7. The protesters have taken a very sensitive issue in hand hence government should announce immediately a panel consists of Islamic scholars, Parliamentarians from all political parties and Presidents of all Bars to approach the protestors for a meaningful dialogue to convince the leadership of protestors to end the sit-in peacefully.

8. Government should improve its poor handling and also take additional law enforcement from Punjab and AJK. Frontier constabulary is not a trained force for anti-riots but it is a border management force, hence the Federal government needs to move with properly trained anti-riot force to act with minimum damage and to get maximum output in terms of effective law enforcement.

9. A joint session of the Parliament should be called immediately to discuss the current ongoing deadlock, taking the parliament into confidence and to propose a common strategy to resolve the issue without any further delay.

10. More effective and well-strategized administrative measures should be taken to implement the orders of the Supreme Court as the Supreme Court may pass some adverse orders against the Government for non-compliance.

11. Government has to refrain from violence as it will further deteriorate the situation but use the best option, which is effective use of dialogue through skillful and dedicated imminent personalities from all walks of life.

12. Ensure to restore at least half of the in and out going routes of Islamabad at any cost with the help of Punjab and Islamabad Police. Continued blocked Islamabad is not in the national interest.

13. Prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi should establish direct contact with the leaders of the Faizabad sit-in and take them into confidence and settle the issue with some assurances to get the matter resolved. The Government may follow the PPP models of dealing with such past large protests and sit-ins in Islamabad.

In the current uncertain situation, the nation wants to see the matters resolved rather counter blame statements and shifting of responsibilities.

Rehman Malik appealed the leadership of sit-in/protesters to resolve this issue harmoniously and peacefully through dialogue in the larger national interest.
