The electronic “pings” heard by multiple ships that are hunting for missing Malaysian Airlines flight 370, which disappeared on March 8, have been described as the “best lead yet” in the complicated investigation

However, officials have cautioned that the pings, which can be picked up by highly sensitive marine listening devices k**wn as hydrophones — but referred to more colloquially as “pinger locators” — may **t in fact be from the aircraft’s flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder. Instead, they could be from whales or other marine life, officials have said
