A great cookbook ? which combines carefully crafted language, a holistic collection of recipes, easy-to-follow instructions, and eye-catching visual elements ? is a treat for both readers and cooks. Hundreds of food-focused books drop later this year, and there?s something for everyone, including: a long-simmering testament to New York City?s (now-closed) wd~50 restaurant, a first book for Top Chef?s Kristen Kish, and new volumes from queen of blogs Smitten Kitchen, London?s Yotam Ottolenghi, and chef-cum-maestro Massimo Bottura of Osteria Francescana fame. Read on for the most notable books in four categories: Restaurants in Book Form Several highly anticipated titles are coming out this fall, including a first book from the Publican in Chicago and a (somewhat mysterious) two-volume set by chef Daniel Humm and restaurateur Will Guidara of Eleven Madison Park in NYC (the restaurant?s first cookbook came out in 2011). Also look out for books from Claridge?s in London and Kachka in Portland, Oregon, among others. Chefs Tackle Home Cooking Several new books zero in on how chefs like to cook at home, including a collection of recipes for cakes, cookies, and puddings adapted from London?s marketplace-cafe Ottolenghi, a 101 course on at-home baking according to chef and restaurateur Claus Meyer of Noma fame, and a tip-filled book on how to get dinner on the table from TV personality and chef Alex Guarnaschelli. Deep Dives and Curated Collections Bartender, writer, and instructor Jim Meehan puts out his second cocktail book this year, an ambitious manual for bar geeks. It will be impossible to miss the latest Smitten Kitchen cookbook ? this one hones in on casual, all-day cooking ? and keep an eye out for chef Massimo Bottura?s gorgeously illustrated second book, Bread is Gold. Memoirs and Non-Cookbooks There?s more to food than cooking and eating ? it can be a useful outline for looking back on a life well lived. This year, writer and chef David Lebovitz, sushi master Nobu Matsuhisa, and chef and restaurateur Jen Agg add their voices to the chorus of memoirs written by those who live a life in food.
