Sindh has contacted Centre for assistance, says Murad

Grand operation in Sukkur and Larkana against criminals

SUKKUR: The Sindh government has contacted the federal interior minister for his assistance for a grand operation in Sukkur and Larkana against criminals.

This was stated by the Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, at a Meet-the- Press programme here on Sunday.

The chief minister was accompanied by the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, and a provincial minister, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah.

He said he had also discussed the law and order situation with his counterpart in Balochistan because terrorists had crossed into Sindh from Balochistan. Syed Murad Ali Shah said that the mayor of Karachi had to face the charges against him while the Sindh government would **t interfere in this matter.

The chief minister said that it was a good sign that the MQM itself demanded action against its leader under Article 6. Syed Murad Ali Shah disclosed that someone had sent a message to him on August 22 warning him that the MQM was about to attack the Chief Minister’s House.

The chief minister said he was flabbergasted because a delegation of the MQM was to meet him and he had assured them that he would address their grievances and yet they took a sudden U-turn. What followed later that day was in everybody’s k**wledge.

He said that he wondered who had given the MQM the instructions for the U-turn and that it needed to be investigated. Syed Murad Ali Shah said that the PPP had protested against governments in the past but always within the **rms of democracy and law.

He said his government was **t against protests provided they were staged within the **rms of democracy. The chief minister of Sindh said that many issues were being discussed with the federal government.

He said that the federal government issued Rs77 billion electricity bills to the Sindh government, and “when we reconciled them we found overbilling by Rs51 billion”. The chief minister said that the federal government had realised the error and assured the Sindh government the overbilling would be written off.

Syed Murad Ali Shah said that hydropower could be generated by establishing a power plant at the Guddu Barrage, but experts rejected the same proposal at the Sukkur Barrage, proposing its modification, which was **t possible.

When the chief minister was asked that since he had held the portfolio of planning and development and finance during Qaim Ali Shah’s tenure as the chief minister, why did he without verifying the schemes release funds and why he did **t do any proper planning, he replied that he had on the floor of the assembly raised the issue and recorded his observations.

However, he admitted that funds were released for some ghost schemes like the scheme for a museum in Sukkur where there was **ne. The chief minister said that MPAs and cabinet ministers demanded packages, but they did **t pursue such packages. He said that he was saddened to see the dilapidated condition of Sukkur.
