LHC scraps age limit policy for LLB admissions
LAHORE: A full bench of the Lahore High Court on Monday scraped the age limit policy, introduced by the Punjab University for admission to LLB programme for being unconstitu-tional, and also formed special committees for scrutiny of law colleges in the province. The bench, led by Chief Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, was hearing petitions questioning five-year LLB programme and age limit of 24 years, fixed by the Punjab University in the light of Pakistan Bar Council’s suggestions. The bench ruled that the age-limit policy was sheer violation of fundamental rights, protected by the Construction.
The petitioner’s counsel argued that the impugned policies were a glaring violation of the mandate of the legal education rules, the law and Constitution. He said it was fundamental right of every citizen to be educated in law or in any other profession and ** rule could be made to discourage people from getting higher education, especially by fixing the age limit. The Pakistan Bar Council’s representatives defended the policies pleading that the rules were made to uplift declining standard of the legal education. They said the bar wanted to discourage mushroom growth of substandard law colleges. However, striking down the age-limit policy, the bench directed all universities and their affiliated colleges to conduct admission to the LLB programme according to the previous policy and seats structure. The bench formed special committees across-the-province comprising representatives of Pakistan Bar Council, Punjab Bar Council, universities/colleges and respective DCOs/ DPOs for the scrutiny of law colleges and academies. The bench directed the committees to submit reports regarding their respective districts by October 24. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/com/YEor/~4/63zQYp1XtVY أكثر... |
