Ghilaf-e-Kaaba changing ceremony held
 

MAKKAH: The annual ceremony to change Ghilaf-e-Kaaba was held on Sunday morning at Masjid al-Haram in Saudi Arabia where millions of Muslims have gathered to perform Haj.

The covering cloth of the Kaaba, k**wn as Kiswa, is changed on the 9th Zilhaj every year on the day of Arafat.The new Ghilaf-e-Kaaba is worth Rs22,000,000. At least 150kg pure gold and silver whereas 670kg Resham have been used in making the cover. It comprises 47 parts with each one of 14m length and 95cm width.

The cover, inscribed with verses from the Holy Quran, was prepared by over 200 weaving experts in Dar-ul-Kiswa factory at the cost of 20 million Saudi riyals.

The old Ghilaf, which covers four walls and the door of Kaaba, is torn into pieces and gifted to foreign dignitaries after the changing ceremony.

Four lanterns of ‘Allahu Akbar’ have also been included this year. Gover**r Makkah and other significant personalities attended the ceremony. About one hundred thousand police have been deployed to secure the pilgrimage sites.
