Accidental deaths very common among peasants, workshop told
 

SUKKUR: A very large number of peasants die due to accidents during work. This was stated at a workshop organized by the Sindh Agriculture and Fishing Workers Union and sponsored by the International Labor Organization (ILO).

Waqar Memon, Asad Memon, Muhammad Salih Babar and others told the workshop that their organization was committed to getting the issues of the growers and peasants resolved. They said that the peasants had been facing a lot of problems while carrying out their responsibilities.

They said that the peasants suffered from some fatal diseases, but there was ** insurance coverage for them. They said that the extent of women peasants’ sufferings was much greater than that of their male counterparts.

They said that the landowners deduct from the salaries of their peasants if the latter failed to turn up for work on account of some illness. Male and female peasants on the occasion narrated their woeful tales before the participants of the workshop. There was ** arrangement for training them on safe spraying measures. The organizers of the workshop distributed some safety material among the peasants.
