Power loadshedding to go before end of govt?s term: PM
 
Says record investment being made in energy sector

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has assured the nation that power loadshedding would be consigned to the dustbin of history before the completion of the tenure of the present government.

Chairing a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy here at the Prime Minister’s House on Tuesday, the prime minister said that considerable power had been added to the national grid that had resulted in reduction of loadshedding.

The government has planned to go for significant addition of power to the national grid with the completion of ongoing projects and it will consequently eliminate loadshedding in Pakistan for all times to come. Federal Secretary Water and Power Younus Dagha gave detailed briefings on the timeline of the completion of the ongoing power projects in Pakistan.

The prime minister was briefed that power projects will be completed before March, 2018. The projects that would be completed between the given timeline will include: three LNG power plants (Bhikki, Haveli-Bahadur, Baloki (3,600MW), Chashma 3 and 4 Nuclear (340MW each), Guddu Gas (400+ MW), Nandipur Gas 100+ MW, Sahiwal Coal (1,320MW), various wind/bagasse (350MW), Patrind HPP Hydel (147MW), Faisalabad Gas (250MW), Neelum Jhelum (969MW), Tarbela 4 Extension (1,410MW) and Port Qasim Power Plant (1,320MW). The meeting was assured that total of 11,131 megawatts power will be made available to the national grid by the March of 2018.

The meeting was also briefed that all transmission line projects are on track to evacuate the ongoing power projects, and billions of rupees have been invested in the existing distribution network to bear the load of additionally generated power through completion of ongoing power projects.

The prime minister said that never in the history of the country such a huge investment had been made into the energy sector. He said the government was **t only working to meet the shortfall of energy but was also catering for the future energy needs of Pakistan.

He said that increased power generation would also contribute towards eco**mic growth, employment generation, increased industrial activity and foreign investment. Nawaz said that he would personally monitor the progresson the ongoing power projects across the country and will also perform onsite visits of all power projects to ensure their timely completion.

The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, Minister for Finance Senator Ishaq Dar, Minister for Planning and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Petroleum Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif, SAPM for Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi, Secretary to PM Fawad Hasan Fawad, Finance Secretary Dr Waqar Masood, Secretary Cabinet Division Nadeem Asif, Secretary Petroleum and Natural Resources Arshad Mirza and senior officials.
