After an in-depth analysis of Apple, the European Commission found that Ireland gave the company illegal tax benefits worth $14.5 billion (€13 billion).

On Tuesday, after a three-year investigation into Apple's Irish tax affairs, Apple was ordered to pay the €13 billion to the Irish government. The ruling states that the dealings are "illegal under EU state aid rules, because it allowed Apple to pay substantially less tax than other businesses. Ireland must **w recover the illegal aid."*
