American Airlines retires 20 MD-80 jets on Tuesday as it modernizes fleet

American Airlines conducted a rare mass-retirement of MD-80 ****** aircraft in its fleet on Tuesday, sending 20 of them to their resting place in the New Mexican desert.*

The planes landed one after the other Tuesday in Roswell, New Mexico, one of several airports in the Southwest that serve as huge outdoor mass graves, of sorts, for retired aircraft.*

An American Airlines spokeswoman told Mashable this was "one of the largest one-day retirements in airline history."

The airline is in the process of replacing the venerable MD-80 "Super 80" aircraft with more fuel efficient and modern Boeing 737s and Airbus A320 ****** jets, marking the end of an era for the airline.* Read more...
